Your Favourite Six Plants for Your Garden

Last month, I asked if you had to choose just six plants for your garden that you could not be without, which six plants would you choose? There was a great response to this question on The Pink Wheelbarrow’s blog post, and on the Twitter and Instagram pages.

Like many of you, there are plants I love when they bloom, like beautiful, blousy Peony Roses and plants which I love for their colour and scent like Lavender and then there’s the red Crocosmia Lucifer which gives that fabulous pop of red at the end of the Summer and oh, the Rhododendrons when they burst into flower!

In order to narrow down the huge selection of plants I have in my garden to just six favourites, I framed the choice with the question: which six plants could you not be without in your garden? So if I only had to choose six, my six would be the following: Lupins, Hostas, Foxgloves, Hardy Geraniums, Alliums and Salvias – such a hard task to choose only six!

I loved hearing about all the choices from everyone who commented on the post and with each one, I found myself thinking those plants should have been in my top six! Here are a few of my favourites:

“I would probably have foxgloves, acer tree, hart’s tongue ferns, hydrangeas, hellebores and geraniums.” 30 Days of Wild Parenting
“Peony, Roses, Clematis, Honeysuckle, Hydrangeas and Fuchsias.” Mrs Brambledown
“My 6 would be lupins, foxgloves, salvia, tulips, roses, clematis.” Old House in the Shires
“My favorites are crepe myrtle, shrub roses, lavender, camellias, bee balm, and spider wort (the lime green color).” CadyLuck Leedy
“Must have Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, Hostas, Hardy Geraniums, Dahlias, Gladioli and Calendula.” – JC Gaskin
Foxglove, scabiosa, carnation, lupin, red hot poker and lavender – Sharon Easton

The following collated results are neither scientific nor anything -ific: they are just the compilation of a bit of banter between gardeners but these top choices might inspire you to plant some in your garden, or help to frame your own choice of six plants you just could not be without in your garden!

N.B. This chart drove me beyond the point of insanity and I have given up on making the graphic bigger as I am about to throw something through a window!
